With video games regularly costing $70, knowing how to find the best free games can save you hundreds of dollars over the year. Whether you play on PC, mobile, or console, here's a look at how I've found some of my favorite free games—including blockbuster hits and hidden gems.

Steam is a perennial favorite of PC gamers and it's the first place I check for free games. The storefront has an entire section dedicated to free-to-play games (you'll find it in the Categories tab), which includes everything from MMORPGs like Star Wars: The Old Republic to fast-paced FPS games like The Finals.

You can even sort by genre to narrow down all your options. To find the newest free games, you'll want to scroll down to the Trending Free Steam tab, which aggregates the hottest new releases and often includes tons of great indies.

Beyond Steam, the Epic Games Store is another solid option. It's here that you'll find Fortnite and Rocket League, but the platform also offers up free games every week. Just make an account, claim your free game, and it's yours to keep forever.

For indie games, you can't beat itch.io. Itch.io is home to thousands of indie games—and you can easily sift through all the free titles by setting the price option to "Free". You won't find many big-budget titles here, but if you're a fan of experimental and indie titles, itch.io should be bookmarked on your browser.

Other good options include GOG and Prime Gaming. GOG is home to classic games, indies, and everything in between, though its free games catalog isn't quite as impressive as Steam, Epic Games Store, or itch.io.

And while Prime Gaming doesn't technically give out free games, Prime members will find an assortment of games up for grabs each month. I've used it to claim titles like Forager and SteamWorld Heist, and it's always worth checking to see what's been added to the catalog.

Free Games on Mobile (App Store and Google Play Store)

Hunting down free games on mobile is easy. Finding good free games on mobile is something else entirely. Thankfully, there's no shortage of hidden gems available on iOS and Android, so long as you know where to look.

On the App Store, it never hurts to check the Popular Games and the What We're Playing Now sections. The former pulls together hit games that have accrued a massive audience, while the latter is a collection of favorites from the folks running the App Store. Not all of these are free, but the vast majority are—and since they span a wide range of genres and are always changing, these two spots are a great place to start.

Alternatively, you can just scroll to the Top Free Games section towards the bottom of the App Store. It's here you'll find titles like Roblox, Monopoly Go, Subway Surfers, and Brawl Stars.

Finding free games on Android follows a similar process. Along with browsing the Top Rated and Popular Games sections, you can skim through the Top Charts section that is titled Top Free. The Top Grossing section is another good option, though note that some of these may be paid games or be heavily monetized with in-game microtransactions.

Free Games on Xbox, PS5, and Switch

Finding free games on Xbox Series X, PS5, and Nintendo Switch is a simple process—and the same technique works for all three platforms. You'll first need to head to the respective storefront on your console. Once there, you'll find options to filter games by price. Set this to $0 and you should get a long list of free-to-play games.

Alternatively, some platforms often advertise a section of Free Games, giving you quick access to the most popular free titles.

You can even check out the Most Popular section of these storefronts, as you'll often find free games here such as Fortnite, Rocket League, and Apex Legends.
