It was a busy day for the Irish rowers with the highlight being Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy’s defence of their men’s lightweight double sculls crown.
Ireland’s first track athletes got their campaign off with Cathal Doyle, Luke McCann and Andrew Coscoran all failing to qualify in the 1,500m while Sean Waddilove and Robert Dickson came in an agonising fourth in the men’s skiff medal race as a false start scuppered their chances.
The afternoon’s action continues with equestrian as Ireland’s show jumping team of Daniel Coyle, Cian O'Connor and Shane Sweetnam contest the team final from 1pm.

Fintan McCarthy says it's 'the privilege of a life-time' rowing alongside Paul O'Donovan Paul O'Donovan is maintaining that Ireland were underdogs for the race saying with a tongue-in-cheek that they 'proved the doubters wrong.' "It was always in doubt for everyone else," he says. "No-one believed we could win this competition. And against all the odds we stuck with it. Italy the number one seeds put it up to us. "We're very happy to have proved the doubters wrong so it's a good day for the Irish." Fintan McCarthy says it's the 'privilege of a lifetime' rowing alongside O'Donovan, who is Ireland's first ever athlete to medal at three Olympic games. He also gave a huge shout to coach Dominic Casey. "Coming up to the final there were no nerves," says McCarthy. "I felt we were back at our best. It was amazing to be here in front of all the Irish supporting us. It's been a crazy journey the last few years. It's amazing." "I think that's a fluke to be honest," laughs O'Donovan after being told he's Ireland's most decorated olympian ever. "The tricolours were everywhere. The French were drowned out!"

Ellen Walshe qualifies for the semi-finals The Dubliner finishes in sixth place in her heat of the 200m individual medley and her time of 2.11.81 is enough to see her through to the next round, which will take place 8.22pm tonight.
Corrigan and Timoney finish in sixth in men's pair final The Fermanagh duo were well in contention at the half-way point pushing for the bronze medal position but they fell back in the second half, dropping back down to sixth. It was a very competitive race up the top with Great Britain going for gold from afar but they appeared to catch a crab in the last few strokes and were reeled in by a storming finish from the Croatians. The Swiss came home in third for the bronze medal.

It leaves him in tied 43rd out of 60 competitors but he will be in action over the weekend seeing as there is no cut in the Olympics.
Rory McIlroy is making an impression on the tournament sitting on -5 after ten holes of his second round. He's six back from defending champion Xander Schauffele who shot a 66 on Friday.
